Episode 2 of Spirit Plate takes us to the lush landscapes of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi, where I had the honor of joining my brother, Chef Kealoha Domingo (@nuikealohahawaii), and his family for a day that celebrated tradition, community, and the sacred connection between people and the land.
Together, we prepared a 400-pound pig for roasting in an underground imu oven, a ceremony filled with care, prayer, and purpose. I also learned about taro, the root that has nourished Hawaiian people for generations. Standing in the fields reminded me of my own heritage and the deep respect we hold for the plants that sustain us.
The day ended with a feast of roasted pig and my venison stew, shared among family and friends, followed by an offering to the Creator in gratitude. It was a reminder that food is more than nourishment, it’s a story, a prayer, and a connection to who we are.
Episode 2 of Spirit Plate is streaming now on PBS and PBS YouTube.
